Data Brief: Frontline Workers in the SouthCoast
A new PPC data brief shows that the South Coast region is more reliant on essential frontline workers as compared to the rest of Massachusetts. These workers earn less on average than the workforce as a whole, and many are women with caregiver responsibilities in the home

Transforming Quincy
The Quincy Center Urban Revitalization District Project (URDP), one of the largest ongoing urban renewal projects in the state, is a significant contributor of jobs, labor income, and economic output. Since the formation of the URDP in 2007, more than $425.2 million dollars in public and private funds have been expended or are anticipated to be expended to support public infrastructure improvements, building renovations, and building construction.

Southcoast Health 2019 CHNA
The community health needs assessment documents the major demographic, socioeconomic, and health trends in the region. Our assessment focuses on health access, substance use disorder, wellness and chronic disease, maternal, infant, and child health, environmental health, and health disparities. It is enhanced by stakeholder interviews, focus groups, and an online survey of the region’s service providers.

Economic Impact Analysis of Vineyard Wind’s Proposals
The PPC conducted a pair of analyses to describe the economic contributions to employment and economic output that the proposed 400 and 800 MW Vineyard Wind Offshore Wind Energy Projects can be expected to have on the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the regional economy of Southeastern Massachusetts.

Understanding the Housing Needs and Challenges Facing Provincetown, MA
Building on our previous work for the Town of Provincetown, the PPC’s latest report is an analysis of the town’s housing market, which highlights the stark differences between local incomes and the cost of housing and considers the ramifications of the continuation of the status quo.

2018 Massachusetts Offshore Wind Workforce Assessment
This report presents the results of a comprehensive workforce and economic analysis that estimates the labor needs and economic impacts associated with the planning, construction, and maintenance of 1,600 MW of offshore wind (OSW) energy. Among other things, this report finds that workforce development efforts should focus on the three priority occupations of water transportation workers, trade workers, and operations & maintenance technicians, all of which will be in high demand.
A Comprehensive Analysis of the Massachusetts Maritime Economy
Commissioned by the Seaport Economic Council, this report describes the major features of the maritime economy and their impact on the overall state economy, with a focus on marine technology. A survey of marine businesses highlights the challenges and opportunities facing the maritime economy.

Tracking Municipal Conditions
Launched in 2012, the SouthCoast Urban Indicators Project (SCUIP) tracks important conditions in the Gateway Cities of Fall River and New Bedford on a regularly updated webpage.
The Public Policy Center (PPC) at UMass Dartmouth was the University’s applied social science research, technical assistance, and public service unit based was affiliated with its Department of Public Policy. The PPC was officially closed by outgoing Chancellor Robert Johnson effective July 1, 2020 after nearly forty years of serving the University and the region.
